Our story

Five generations of quality baking.

Having just passed its 130th anniversary, this famous landmark was established in 1894 by its founder, Antonio Veniero of Sorrento, who immigrated to the United States in 1885 at fifteen years old. He opened it as a pool emporium and caffè, serving his own baked goods to customers — the demand for his Italian pastries and cakes went on to win him awards in Rome, Bologna, and at the New York World’s Fair.

The bakery has been continuously owned and operated by the Veniero family ever since. In 1984 the family added an adjoining enclave with a ceiling of stained-glass panels and the original pressed tin. Many of the shop’s original details remain: hand-stamped metal ceilings, specially designed etched glass doors, highly polished wood mirrors, and ornate marble floors, restored after nearly a century of wear.

Upon entering, you’re greeted by a wonderful display of traditional and regional Italian confections — a full 40 feet of ecstasy for the dessert lover, filled with the aroma of freshly baked biscotti, traditional cheesecakes, and specialty cakes.

“I’m so proud and honored that our once little Italian bakery is part of the great city of New York for the last 130 years. Veniero’s success lies with our exceptional history with the neighborhood, which drives us to uphold our excellent reputation. Today, Veniero’s serves over 150 desserts, from traditional butter cookies and cannolis to red velvet cake, chocolate mousse cake, and our signature traditional Italian cheesecake.”

— Robert Zerilli, President & Manager, current co-owner with sisters Claudia, Peggy & Linda

All products are baked daily with the freshest, highest-quality ingredients — no preservatives, trans fats, or high fructose corn syrup. All baking is still done in the original basement bake shop.
