Empire Coffee
& Tea Co.

New York's premier coffee roaster, roasting fresh since 1908 — Ninth Avenue, New York, and Bloomfield Street, Hoboken.

Our Story

Not a pretty little boutique shop.

The original Empire Coffee & Tea Company is at 568 Ninth Avenue, New York, NY, on an out-of-the-way stretch of that avenue famous for its gourmet foods — the fish store, the bakery, the pasta store, the butcher, the cheese, the Italian deli, the Greek bakery, and the spice store are all neighbors. Ninth Avenue is the cradle of New York gourmet hip: great food, great prices, worldly style.

This store is all about fresh-ground coffee and unique tea — lots of it. Bags of fresh-roasted gourmet coffee from around the world cover the walls and floor. The selection is dazzling and the smell is intoxicating. It's sharp, smart, and fast — built for New Yorkers who want the best coffee in the world, right now, and cheap.

Our second home is in Hoboken, New Jersey, where Abbe runs the shop with her husband and knows nearly everyone who walks by. For nearly the past 100 years, Empire has been developing one-of-a-kind coffee blend recipes — only about one in twenty experimental blends ever earns the title "Exclusive Empire Blend." That short list includes house favorites like Truckstop Fiesta, Starry Night, Daylight Savings, and Bliss Blend.

Brewing Guide

A century of shopkeeper's advice.

Straight from the questions we answer at the counter every day.

Dark roast or light?

Dark roasts (French or City roast) are toasty, smoky, and bold, sacrificing some nuance for punch. Light roasts (American or Vienna) keep more of the bean's complex, delicate flavor. Espresso — the darkest of the darks — gives the boldest hit in the smallest cup.

Myth, busted: dark roast does not mean more caffeine. Roasting burns off caffeine, so the longer the roast, the less caffeine remains — espresso actually has the least caffeine pound for pound.

What grind do I need?

Espresso / cappuccino machineExtra fine
Auto-drip, paper filterFine–medium
Auto-drip, metal-mesh filterMedium
Manual drip / pour-overMedium-coarse
French pressCoarse
PercolatorCoarse

How much coffee per cup?

Most customers use 1 to 2 tablespoons per 6 oz cup. Start at 1.5 tablespoons of the appropriate grind, then adjust up or down to taste.

How do I store it?

Airtight, always. Good for about a week at room temperature in a sealed container; freeze it airtight for longer — about two months for whole bean, three to four weeks ground.
